The Academic Year 2012-2013

The following schedule contains the dates prescribed by the University Senate for academic activities. Dates relating to fee payment, cancellation of course selections, late charges, and other fees or charges will be published in the Important Dates and Deadlines section of the Registration Website (carleton.ca/registration ) The academic year is divided into three terms:

  • Summer term: May - August
  • Fall term: September - December
  • Winter term: January - April

Courses are offered in the following patterns:

  • Early summer: May - June
  • Late summer: July - August
  • Full summer: May - August
  • Fall term: September - December
  • Winter term: January - April
  • Fall/winter: September - April

Courses are offered during the day and the evening.

Fall Term 2012

September 1

  • Last day for receipt of applications from potential fall (November) graduates.

September 3

  • Statutory holiday, University closed.

September 4

  • Fall term begins.

September 4

  • Orientation for Teaching Assistants.

September 4-5

  • Academic Orientation. All students are expected to be on campus. Class and laboratory preparations departmental introductions for students and other academic preparation activities will be held.

September 6

  • Fall and fall/winter classes begin.

September 19

  • Last day for registration.
  • Last day to change courses or sections for fall/winter and fall term courses.
  • Students who have not deposited two (2) final copies of their thesis in the office of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs must register.

September 30

  • Last day to withdraw from fall term and fall/winter courses with a full fee adjustment.

October 5

  • University Day at Carleton. Undergraduate classes suspended. Graduate courses continue.

October 8

  • Statutory holiday, University closed.

December 1

  • Last day for receipt of applications from potential winter (February) graduates.
  • Last day for submission to the thesis supervisor of (6) examination copies of Master’s and Ph.D. theses for winter graduation.

December 3 (Monday)

  • Fall term ends. Last day of fall term classes.
  • Last day for academic withdrawal from fall term courses

December 4-5

  • No classes take place

December 6-19

  • Final examinations in fall term courses and mid-term examinations in fall/winter courses will be held. It may be necessary to schedule examinations on Saturday or during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa.

December 16

  • Fall Co-op Work Term Reports due

December 24 to January 1, 2013

  • University closed.

Winter Term 2013

January 7

  • Winter-term classes begin.

January 18

  • Last day for registration for winter term courses.
  • Last day to change courses or sections for winter term courses.
  • Students who have not deposited two (2) final copies of their thesis in the Office of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs must register.

January 31

  • Last day for withdrawal from winter term and winter portion of fall/winter courses with full fee adjustment

February 18

  • Statutory holiday. University closed

February 18-22

  • Winter Break, classes suspended.

March 1

  • Last day for receipt of applications from potential Spring (June) graduates.
  • Last day for receipt of applications for admission from candidates who wish to be guaranteed consideration for financial assistance (including Carleton fellowships, scholarships and teaching assistantships) administered by Carleton University. Candidates whose applications are received after the March 1 deadline date may be considered for the award of a fellowship, scholarship or teaching assistantship.

March 29

  • Statutory holiday. University closed

April 10

  • Winter term ends. Last day of fall/winter and winter term classes.
  • Last day for academic withdrawal from fall/winter and winter term courses.

April 11-12

  • No classes take place.

April 13-27

  • Final examinations in winter term and fall/winter courses may be held. It may be necessary to schedule examinations on Saturday or during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa.

April 16

  • Winter Co-op Work Term Reports are due.

Summer Term 2013

May 6

  • Early summer and full summer classes begin.

May 13

  • Last day for registration and course changes for early summer courses.

May 17

  • Last day for registration and course changes for full summer courses.
  • Students who have not deposited two (2) final copies of their thesis in the Office of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs must register.

May 20

  • Statutory holiday. University closed.

May 31

  • Last day to withdraw from early summer courses with full fee adjustment.

June 7

  • Last day to withdraw from full summer courses with a full fee adjustment

June 18

  • Last day of early summer classes (NOTE: Full summer classes resume July 3)
  • Last day for academic withdrawal from early summer courses

June 21-26

  • Early summer examinations may be held. It may be necessary to schedule an examination during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa. In exceptional circumstances, it may be necessary to schedule an examination on a Sunday.

June 30

  • Final deadline for summer term fee payment.

July 1

  • Statutory holiday. University closed.

July 3

  • Late summer classes begin. Full summer classes resume.

July 9

  • Last day for registration and course changes for late summer courses.

July 19

  • Last day for withdrawal from late summer courses with full fee adjustment.

August 1

  • Last day for submission to the thesis supervisor of six (6) examination copies of Master’s and Ph.D. theses for Fall graduation.

August 5

  • Statutory Holiday. University closed

August 15

  • Last day of late summer and full summer classes. Classes follow a Monday schedule.
  • Last day for academic withdrawal from late summer and full summer courses and any other courses that end this term

August 16

  • Summer Co-op Work Term Reports are due

August 17-22

  • Summer examinations may be held. It may be necessary to schedule an examination during the day for classes held in the evening and vice versa. In exceptional circumstances, it may be necessary to schedule an examination on a Sunday.
